Candles around the Admin building will commemorate tsunami victims

For students who are overwhelmed by the effects of the tsunami in South and Southeast Asia and not sure how to help, a low-key fundraiser should give some peace of mind.

A candlelight vigil will be held on Monday, January 17, at 6 p.m. around the flagpole in front of the Administration building. Candles will be sold at the Reynolds Club on Friday and Monday for three dollars each. Donation bins for clothes and foodstuffs will be passed around at the candlelight vigil.

Organizers of the vigil include both MUNUC and the Model U.N. team. Walter Lamberson, a second-year in the College and one of the organizers of the event, urged everyone affected by the tragedy to take action. “Maybe you agree that you should sacrifice something. Perhaps, you limit that to whatever change you have in your pockets when you happen to walk by a donation bin,” Lamberson said. “Maybe, though, you’re willing to sacrifice the cost of, say, a pair of socks, or a couple bottles of water to do, for the same price, a service that can effectively save several lives in the immediate future. Arguably, this is the best bargain in the world.”
