[05/16] Tuesday

7:30 p.m. Join the Chamber Music Program for its Spring Quarter Showcase! Enjoy Brahms, Villa-Lobos, Schubert, and more from students in the program. Logan Center Performance Penthouse, free.

7:30 p.m. The end of the month means Third Tuesday Jazz is back! The Hyde Park Jazz Society invites local musicians to perform in this monthly favorite. Nourish your body with food and drinks (alcoholic and otherwise!) and your soul with great music. Café Logan, free.

[05/18] Thursday

 7 p.m. Featuring trans and nonbinary performers followed by an open mic for all participants—cis, trans, or questioning—Gender and Other Childhood Lies: An Open Mic Night highlights the voices of trans artists. Sanctuary Cafe, free but limited seating.

7:30 p.m. Apsara is collaborating with UT/TAPS to present Nari, a show named for the Sanskrit word for woman. This performance explores aspects of worship and femininity and “the dichotomy between goddesses and women in South Asia” through South Asian dance, Rupi Kaur’s poetry, and short film. Logan Center, Theater East 127, tickets are $6 in advance, $8 at the door.

7:30 p.m. The UChicago Music Department hosts a listening session with famed jazz pianist Vijay Iyer. Stop by for an evening of music and discussion, moderated by Peter Margasak, longtime critic of the Chicago Reader. Logan Center, Performance Penthouse 901, free.

[05/19] Friday

59 p.m. Everyone’s favorite student radio station is hosting a pre-MAB Summer Breeze! Join WHPK for an evening featuring Palm, Fee Lion, Clearance, and Blackerface. Bartlett Quad, 5640 S. University Ave, free and open to the public.

7:30 p.m. Come enjoy a joint concert between the UChicago Women’s Ensemble and the Motet Choir. The program includes songs from different American choral genres, as well as songs from around the world. Ida Noyes Hall, 3rd Floor Theater, 1212 E. 59th Street, free.

7:30 p.m. The ever-creative Vijay Iyer comes to Logan with the Vijay Iyer Sextet. Says The New York Times, “There’s probably no frame wide enough to encompass the creative output of the pianist Vijay Iyer." Logan Center Performance Hall, there will be a free, pre-concert performance at 6 p.m. by the Julius Tucker Quartet in Café Logan, tickets are $5 for students, $28 for UChicago faculty and staff, and are otherwise $35.

[05/20] Saturday

7 p.m. Join the UChicago Middle East Music Ensemble for a performance of traditional and folk music from the Arab world. The ensemble features over 45 musicians on traditional Middle Eastern instruments, and is directed by Wanees Zarour. This performance features special guest singer Hela Melki and percussionist Tareq Rantisi. Logan Center Performance Hall, free but donations recommended, $5 for students, $10 for non-students.

 7:3011 p.m. Who doesn’t love Disney movies? Join the Chicago Swing Dance Society for a Disney-Themed Java Jive! The playlist will include favorites from Toy Story, Jungle Book, and more. Come dressed as your favorite Disney character! Ida Noyes Hall, 1212 E. 59th Street, free.

[05/21] Sunday

911 a.m. Rip apart the dance floor with animal-like intensity at Zoomba at the Zoo! Incorporating all types of dancing—from salsa to mambo—this zumba experience is sure to fulfill your dancing needs. Lincoln Park Zoo, $20 for participants age 18+.

3 p.m. Featuring pieces by assistant professor Sam Pluta and various undergraduate composers as well as an appearance by Spektral Quartet, the New Music Ensemble performance guarantees an afternoon of musical merriment. Fulton Hall, free.

6:308:30 p.m. SAMSU Presents: Citylights 2017, an array of activities centered around Singaporean life. Hutchinson Commons, Reynolds Club, free.

7:309:30 p.m. Not over the Hamilton frenzy? Iris, a theatre troupe for people of color at the University, is holding a Conversation with Hamilton Stars, a discussion with Karen Olivo (Angelica Schuyler) and Chris Lee (Marquis de Lafayette/Thomas Jefferson) about performers of color in diverse theatrical spaces. Chris Lee will follow with a special performance. Logan Center, free tickets available with UCID.
