Provost office adds two new posts

Provost Thomas Rosenbaum announced last week plans to create and redistribute roles within his office in an effort to address shifting strategic priorities. The announcement followed discussions among faculty and administration members about the office’s goals.

Professors Cathy Cohen and Larry Norman will fill the roles of deputy provost of graduate education and the arts, respectively.

Norman, an associate professor in Romance Languages and Literatures, will officially assume the recently created position of deputy provost for the arts on January 1, 2008. He will oversee the final stages of planning for the Reva and David Logan Center for Creative and Performing Arts, scheduled for completion in 2011.

Norman hopes to invigorate communication among campus arts groups, an area which has been weak in the past, he said.

In his new position, Norman will attempt to connect the arts scene in greater Chicago to Hyde Park by “bringing people in and sending people out” in the city, he said.

Cathy Cohen, a political science professor, will assume her role as deputy provost for graduate education on January 1, 2008 as well. She will lead a “critical assessment of the graduate experience across the University,” focusing on education, teaching responsibilities, and campus life, according to the statement released by the provost’s office. Administrators hope that the study will help define the future of graduate education at the University.

The realignment of the Provost’s office is the most recent in a series of new administrative appointments for the University since President Robert Zimmer took office.
