Sports Shorts 3/2/07: Track’s Weijer takes home weekly award

Last weekend, in its final preparation for the UAAs, track showed it was on pace to bring its top game against the rest of the league. The conference will have to keep an extra eye out for fourth-year thrower Neil Weijer who took home the first UAA Athlete of the Week honors of his career Tuesday for his performance at the Maroon Invite.

The veteran launched the 35-pound weight throw 15.26m for the longest toss recorded in the UAA to date last Friday at the Maroon Invite. While the mark took second in the event behind St. Ambrose fourth-year Marcus Brand’s 15.26m, it cleared his previous best by a long shot.

Prior to Friday’s outing, Weijer’s best mark was another runner-up effort, a 14.54m pitch at the Chicago Invite at Henry Crown on January 20. After that, Weijer saw a dropoff in his toss, falling as short as 12.89m before returning to earlier form and then some.

Chicago will be looking to Weijer to have another good day with the weight throw as they take on the UAA’s best, starting today at the Reggie Lewis Center in Boston.
