The City of Chicago passed a bill this week that, as of September, will make it illegal for anyone to sell foie gras within city limits, imposing a $500 per day fine for those who attempt it. Obviously, top Chicago chefs, and food enthusiasts like myself, are less than pleased. Not that it will matter since I’m heading back to New York before the ban takes effect, but I might be inclined to savor a few more French dinners in solidarity between now and June. When I was writing that last sentence, I almost included a little tidbit of New York arrogance and opined that New York would never do such a crazy thing as ban foie gras (which is probably true)…and then I held my tongue: I might have said the same thing about smoking in bars a few years ago.
