Voters reject intelligent design

By Alec Brandon

Kansas will learn science, not religion, in biology classes again:

Kansas voters on Tuesday handed power back to moderates on the State Board of Education, setting the stage for a return of science teaching that broadly accepts the theory of evolution, according to preliminary election results.

Hopefully this is a sign that voters rejected the evangelical hogwash promoted by Bush that teaching intelligent design is about “choice” and open “discussion” in the classroom. A while back Bush had this to say about ID:

I think that part of education is to expose people to different schools of thought…you’re asking me whether or not people ought to be exposed to different ideas, the answer is yes.

It is good to see that people understand that modern science is, well, just that. It isn’t about giving a voice to any crackpot theory that runs counter to the empirical basis that modern science has found. If ID wants a seat at the table it should go through the same process that theories of evolution did–science.Score one for the protection of modern Western thought.
