Since I last blogged about gender issues, New York State killed the idea of letting people choose their own sex (e.g. in order for one’s psychological gender to pull rank on physical gender). Now, an Indian runner was stripped of a medal after failing a “gender test” that showed she may not really be a she, or at least not in the scientific sense the test relies on. I never really thought of the implications on sport of allowing for more liberal general choice policies and what to do about those whose gender is more ambiguous. It’s a tough one, no doubt about it. Exclusion is not the answer, but I don’t know what is.
