It was good to see Harvard announce today that it was getting rid of early admissions. But what is really interesting is the market power this move shows Harvard has. Every other college uses early admissions to lock in anxious (and risk averse) students. In my opinion, they do it to game the students and ensure a quality class. Harvard can pull this off without gaming the students and get some good press in doing so. A couple years ago Yale made a similar move by getting rid of its early decision program and going to using single-choice early action. Many prognosticated that Yale’s move would lead to other college adopting the same change of policy. It hasn’t happened. I doubt Harvard’s change will do that either.
