Obituary: Robert L. Gaumond

Robert L. Gaumond, a first-year student in the College, died Thursday, Dec.12 in Chicago. Gaumond, 18, lived in Shoreland Hall and was a member of Dewey House.

German instructor Darren Ilett described Gaumond as a good student who had no academic problems. “No one saw this coming because there were no warning signs,” Ilett said.

Gaumond grew up in Oxon Hill, Maryland, where he played the French horn in the Prince Georges All County Orchestra. He was also honored for a computer science project in the 2002 Prince Georges’ Area Science Fair.

He is survived by his parents, Charles and Ruth Gaumond, and an older sister, Anne, a student at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

A funeral service was held in Oxon Hill on Dec, 20. Dewey House residents are currently planning a memorial service for Gaumond in Chicago.

“The University community mourns the loss of Robert Gaumond. The residents of Dewey House and Robert’s friends are very upset by his death, as it would be with the loss of anyone in the community,” said Susan Art, dean of students in the College.

Art urges students that may need extra support to contact the Student Counseling Resource Center.
