IM Insider breaks down futbol finals: Sports Shorts 3/3/06

It’s that time of year again. With the intramural indoor soccer championships on the line this weekend, the top-secret, highly anonymous IM Insider has the scoop on what’s going down at Henry Crown.

In the undergraduate men’s division, defending champions TuTh take on Fallerz Ballerz, the surprise team from the resident bracket. After losing crucial players to graduation, including German legend Markus Reisinger, TuTh has struggled to recapture the form of last season. However, the experience of third-year captain Ruben Lienhard, who has three intramural championship t-shirts hung up in his closet, is second to none, and that could be the deciding factor in this match.

Los Economistas will square off against Hoover ReUnited for the graduate men’s championship. This contest is a rematch of an earlier group-phase clash. With both teams missing key players, the match ended 7–4 in favor of the aging Economists. Hoover has had the tougher schedule, knocking out the Varsity team and TCFC en route to the final. The crucial factor for the Economists will be keeping a lid on the passion that can be a double-edged sword for their team.

Unlike its male counterparts, the undergraduate co-ed race is still wide open heading into the final weekend. Pocket Rockets, Stony, New House, Lynn-Matthews, and Fish all have a shot at the championship. The IM Insider could not care less about who wins this title.

The graduate co-ed division is down to its final four, with the defending champions Fat Bastards taking on Maphletes and Varsity matching up against Apathy. Expect the Varsity to face the FBs in the final, where the inside knowledge of defected Varsity member Randi Leppla could give the latter squad the crucial tactical edge in what is sure to be a battle.
