Pair of Maroons earn conference honors

The UAA named two Maroons Athletes of the Week on Tuesday. First-year jumper Appie Hirve won the award for women’s track and field, and first-year Bharath Sithian was recognized for men’s tennis.

Hirve provisionally qualified for the national championship in the triple jump at the Wisconsin-Whitewater Invite February 11. Her 11.29 meter performance took top honors in the event and helped lead the Maroons to a first place finish at the meet. This is her second UAA Athlete of the Week honor of the season.

Sithian was named Athlete of the Week for the first time thanks to a notable performance at Wabash College February 11 and 12. He won all three of his singles matches, scoring the Maroons’ only point in a loss to Kenyon, and combined with his partner, second-year Vivek Venkataraman, to sweep three doubles matches. Sithian’s work paced the Maroons to a 2-1 finish.

WAA Shootout to benefit local schools

Local kids are about to get a little boost from the women of Ratner.

The Women’s Athletic Association (WAA) will hold its annual fundraiser to benefit physical education programs at neighborhood schools. Female athletes from all sports are selling raffle tickets, with winners to be drawn during tonight’s men’s and women’s basketball showdowns against Rochester.

Prizes include airline tickets to anywhere in the nation, White Sox tickets, autographed memorabilia from local pro sports franchises, and cash.

“This is the WAA’s biggest and most important event of the year,” said Kate Rhodes, association president and a third-year in the College. “Every varsity female athlete has donated their time to putting this fundraiser together. All of the WAA executive board greatly anticipates the success of this event, and we know all of our hard work will pay off.”

Tickets can be purchased at the games from any female varsity athlete.
