I suggest that Amanda Steele (“Editorial Board Should Not Discourage Free Speech,” 2/23/09) recall that the First Amendment prohibits government censorship of speech. The Maroon editorial her letter was responding to did not suggest that government at any level prevent students from demonstrating against the crazies, just that the students ought to ignore them. Nobody disputes that we’re allowed to protest. The question is whether we should. Fred Phelps is not the kind of bigot who has any power or who anyone takes seriously. In the world of bigots, Mr. Phelps and his family are harmless, if irritating, insects. Who ever heard of protesting against ants?
